5x3 Design Visions
27 March 2012
Åke Axelsson is featured in the exhibition 5X3 Design Visions at the Copper Smithy in the Finnish village of Fiskars, a lively design centre located west of the capital, Helsinki. 5X3 Design Visions will run for a year and showcases the work of three designers during five different periods. The theme is materials and techniques that represent sustainable development. To present a close-up view of each individual designer, the design process is illustrated by sketches, miniature models and prototypes alongside the finished objects. The result is a series of intimate exhibitions that give visitors new insights into the designers’ work. Johanna Gullichsen and Kaisa Luukkanen exhibit together with Åke Axelsson. Later this year other Gärsnäs designers, Anna von Schewen and Inga Sempé, will also be featured at Fiskars.

A look back at the furniture fair
27 March 2012
Our warm thanks for all the visits to our stand at the furniture fair and our showroom beside Vasa Park. Gärsnäs received a great response both to our classic creations and not least to the new products we presented during the fair. The latter category included Johan Lindstén’s floor lamp Orbit, which was inspired by old filming lamps, the stylish lounge furniture Flake by Nina Jobs, the compact folding table Ballerina by Åke Axelsson, and Pierre Sindre’s sober chair Day. Other products that were presented include Åke Axelsson’s stackable chairs Moderna I and II, which were designed for the restaurant at Stockholm’s Moderna Museet. Moderna is made of beech wood and has sound-absorbent material underneath the seat to increase the level of comfort in busy environments.
Åke Axelsson celebrates his 80th year

Better acoustics in Stockholm’s Skeppsholm Church
22 November 2011450 chairs with a sound-absorbent insert under the seat have greatly improved the acoustics in the historic Skeppsholm Church in the heart of the Swedish capital. Now used as a concert hall, the building was recently renovated for the use of the Eric Ericson International Choral Centre. In conjunction with the renovation, the architectural firm Bach arkitekter commissioned designer Åke Axelsson and Gärsnäs to develop a version of the furniture company’s Akustik chair.
The result is a lightweight and versatile chair which is both stackable and linkable, and which functions well for concerts and other events. The work was done in collaboration with the National Property Board Sweden and the architect in order to meet all requirements and needs.

Gärsnäs selected as official supplier to the Swedish state
02 November 2011
Gärsnäs has again been selected as a framework agreement supplier to the Swedish state. In the face of stiff competition our furniture was ranked highest, primarily for its design and function but also for ergonomic and environmental reasons.
At Gärsnäs we are pleased and proud at the agreement, which is proof that our business strategy that we have pursued since 1893 is still on the right track.

WOOD
DESIGN ÅKE AXELSSON
26 February 2010
Wood is made from beech from sustainably managed forests. The components are made with a traditional steaming technique that uses a minimal amount of wood. Wood is packed disassembled in a recyclable cartonboard in order to reduce transport volume and thereby carbon dioxide emissions. Wood is lightweight and comfortable and meets the highest requirements for both product durability and environmental sustainability. Wood is available in untreated or waxed beech, or with a ecolabelled stain in black, white, dark brown or red. The back can be upholstered in a choice of vegetable tanned
leather, sheepskin or cotton canvas.
KVILT EASY CHAIR AND SOFA
DESIGN NINA JOBS
26 February 2010
Kvilt was shown as a prototype in 2009 at the Stockholm Furniture Fair and Salone del Mobile in Milan. We now present Kvilt as an easy chair and sofa. During the two-year development process, we worked with Nina Jobs to achieve an attractive and comfortable easy chair and sofa of high quality and with a long lifespan. We placed great importance on the design of the wadding and the upholstering process. Kvilt can appear very different thanks to the range of available quilting patterns and the varied combinations of
textiles and leathers. We have chosen to present Kvilt in an exclusive material, Alcantara, and in a cotton canvas. The sofa legs are in solid, turned ash wood. The sofa cover is removable and comes with Velcro strips and a zipper.
MOTION
DESIGN MONICA FÖRSTER
26 February 2010
A bench in natural birch or stained. Available in a right- or left-sided version. When the benches are joined, the resulting asymmetrical form creates a wave movement that runs along the wall. Motion has a strong, playful presence and suits many different environments.
DRESS SOFA
DESIGN ANNA VON SCHEWEN
26 February 2010
The Dress sofa is a complement to last year’s launch of the Dress easy chair. The sofa is recognisable by the draped look of its pleated upholstery and by its concave “waistline”. Dress is compact, offers good seating comfort, and functions as a beautiful room divider thanks to its
pleated back. Dress is covered in Scuba or Lucca, two fabrics from Kvadrat or leather. Different fabrics can be used on the outside and inside of the sofa.
BUTTON II
DESIGN PIERRE SINDRE
26 February 2010
Easy chair, frame in natural ash or stain. Back and armrests in moulded felt, also available in leather. Seat covered in fabric or leather. BUTTON II , an elegant and confortable easy chair. The exciting encounter between

CRAFT I, II
Design Åke Axelsson
26 February 2010

Wood
25 January 2010A chair for the future
This chair takes up very little space when unassembled. By saving 80 to 90 per cent of an ordinary chair’s transport volume, Wood also spares the environment from large amounts of carbon dioxide, packaging materials and storage space. Wood’s components are bent with a traditional steaming technique that uses a minimal amount of wood. The wood used is local red beech with from sustainably managed forests. The chair is constructed to last for many years – another benefit to the environment. Concept and form: Åke Axelsson.
