Möbelfakta
Möbelfakta is a labelling system for furniture, with high prerequisites covering quality, the environment and responsible supply chains, with respect to social, environmental and ethical responsibilities. It spans from functionality and safety conditions to environmental considerations for incoming material and compliance with human rights in the supply chain.
Möbelfakta was founded in 1972 and is currently owned and managed by the IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute and the Swedish Federation of Wood and Furniture Industry. Möbelfakta aims to ensure sustainable development and provide assurance to customers with labelling that covers three areas: quality, the environment and responsible supply chains. Möbelfakta’s requirements also correlate with the prerequisites in public tenders.
Technical and quality requirements are based on established international and European standards and include strength, stability, flammability, acoustics, surface resistance and other characteristics.
Möbelfakta’s environmental requirements are based on current research and are well in line with European and international policies for sustainable development. Product material requirements include raw timber coming from legal and acceptable sources. Furthermore, a number of chemicals must be minimised or avoided completely regarding wood-based materials, textiles and leather, plastic and rubber, upholstery material, glue and metal, as well as products intended for finishing surfaces.
These product-related environmental requirements cover the actual item of furniture and also comprise labelling, spare parts, product information, care instructions and packaging.
When it comes to responsible supply chains, Möbelfakta requires policies and processes to enable systematic risk analysis and follow-up of suppliers. Among other requirements, these are based on the UN’s “Global Compact”: 10 principles on human rights, labour regulations, the environment and anti-corruption. Compliance applies to both the company itself and its entire supply chain.
Möbelfakta’s criteria are continually reviewed and revised to ensure relevance and keep pace with a changing world. Fulfilment checks of these standards among affiliated furniture producers are carried out annually.
